Current Programs
We continue to receive contributions and announce scholarships (See Donors). We've awarded numerous scholarships to graduating seniors in Snohomish County WA. (See News)
In addition to traditional scholarships, we are now offering instruction in various technical and financial subjects. Participants gain both commercial and social skills. Financial Literacy
Our financial literacy program helps families prepare for home ownership and higher education. Focusing on the needs of first and second generation families who may not previously have bought a home, taken out a mortgage or financed higher education, these seminars offer an overview of techniques and strategies for short and long term financial planning.
The overall theme is to demystify the various financial institutions and procedures of the US economy rather than to provide specific directions. The seminars are offered by bilingual instructors. Substantial emphasis is given to terminology. Directory and Web Sites
The LETI-DFS Directory is a "yellow pages" that includes first scores, then hundreds, then thousands of places in "Spanish-friendly" America. There are places where it's easy and convenient to do business in both English and Spanish, and where the proprietors, managers and employees make an extra effort to provide a multi-cultural welcome, even if they don't all speak both languages fluently.
Directory listings link to web sites of the individual businesses. Businesses without a site can have one built by a LETI-DFS participating scholar. LETI-DFS Scholars earn money for building sites and are trained by LETI-DFS mentors on the needed techniques. Surplus revenue from site owners is donated to the LETI-DFS general scholarship fund. The History Project
The History Project is a writing project for high school and college students and for others interested in their personal and community history, which is often overlooked by professional historians. Participants are encourage to obtain modest financial support for their individual project and then to research and write their individual history "book" using an online publishing tool with user-friendly, non-technical editing forms that automatically organizes chapters, layout, graphics, etc.
The History Project uses the same underlying technology as the Directory and Web Site projects, which reinforces the learning and skills achieved by participants. |
